GRIM REAPINGS

Life is a great surprise. I do not see why death

should not be an even greater one.

VLADIMIR NABOKOV (1899–1977)

Writers have made some bizarre exits from life, in scenarios that would stretch even their imaginations. The essayist Francis Bacon (1561–1626) died of pneumonia, having caught a chill whilst stuffing a fowl with snow to preserve it. The lyrical German poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) was a fatal victim of blood poisoning after being cut by the thorn of a rose he had plucked for a young female companion. Having taken a swig of Parisian tap water to prove it was safe to drink, English man of letters Arnold Bennett (1867–1931) contracted typhoid and died (as he lay dying in his Baker Street apartment, the local authority laid straw on the road to deaden the traffic noise).
